NHSA Hits a Major Milestone in the CSO Long Term Control Plan

North Hudson Sewerage Authority and Local Officials Celebrate Pump Installation at Hoboken’s Northwest ResilienCity Park

Last week, representatives from NHSA and the City of Hoboken came together at Northwest ResilienCity Park to celebrate the installation of five new pumps as part of the H6/H7 project—a major milestone in the ongoing Long Term Control Plan (LTCP). The installation marks a significant step forward in NHSA’s commitment to improving the resiliency of the sewer system across North Hudson.

The H6/H7 project is a critical part of the Long Term Control Plan, which aims to modernize the region’s sewer infrastructure and reduce the risk of flooding for residents and businesses. The project includes construction of a high-level storm sewer system, along with a new stormwater pump station that works with the one-million-gallon storage tank at Northwest ResilienCity Park.

The new stormwater system will remove stormwater from the streets of the H6 and H7 drainage basins and convey it to the storage tank in the park, before being pumped out to the Hudson River. The new ABS/Sulzer Submersible Non-clog Pumps will be able to push approximately 30 million gallons per day (or 20,000 gallons per minute) out of the storage tank to the Hudson River during a storm event. The stormwater removed will free up capacity at the treatment plant and reduce combined sewer overflows to the river.

This pump installation is part of NHSA’s historic Long Term Control Plan, a comprehensive initiative aimed at reducing environmental impacts, improving water quality, and protecting the infrastructure of North Hudson for the long term. Spanning over a 25-year timeframe, the LTCP includes projects to expand treatment plant capacity and build detention facilities to manage stormwater effectively. NHSA is the first wastewater authority in the state to complete its CSO Long Term Control Plan and gain the approval of the NJDEP.
