Storm Report: August 7, 2026 Rain Event
On Friday, August 7, approximately 1.45 inches of rain fell across the North Hudson Sewerage Authority service area. The storm's peak 15 minute intensity reached 3.00 inches per hour, placing it in the top 10% most intense storms we have recorded since we began tracking these events. The storm also arrived during the high tide schedule, which limits how quickly water can drain by gravity.
To put that intensity in perspective, three inches per hour is a tropical downpour rate, roughly three times heavier than a typical summer thunderstorm. At that pace, about a half inch of rain can fall in just ten minutes, faster than streets and storm drains can carry it away. That is how a short, intense burst like this can flood streets even when the total rainfall for the day is modest.
During these conditions, our stormwater systems operated as designed.
The Northwest Resiliency Park pumps were online, drawing stormwater out of the H6 and H7 area. The park's detention tank filled during the peak and then emptied as the storm subsided, a sign the system worked properly.
The H1 Pump Station ran for about 2 hours, pumping roughly 4.2 million gallons.
The H5 Pump Station ran for about 3.5 hours, pumping roughly 7.3 million gallons.
Flooding was observed in several locations, including southwest Hoboken and Madison Street near ShopRite. Our pumps stayed online during and after the storm, moving water out of the service area as quickly as conditions allowed.
